Registration scenarios: |
1. You are asked to register a generic account created by ITC accounts. 2. You are asked to register a user on a non-ITC mail server or account. |
Scenario 1: |
1. You are asked to register a generic account created by ITC accounts. When needed, postmaster will register a generic account, as well as create aliases pointing toward those accounts. For example ITC accounts creates the account tuv-wxyz@t.mail.virginia.edu. The department owning the account wants a friendlier name than tuv-wxyz and sends a request to "register" the account as barney@virginia.edu. The department may not know to ask for an alias. If the account tuv-wxyz is not registered, it postmaster would register it. The alias would then be created to point to the tuv-wxyz userid, and the alias should be of type "-t misc" to put it into the appropriate database. For more information on aliases go to the Aliases link. |
Scenario 2: |
2. You are asked to register a user on a non-ITC mail server or account. In a window other than postmaster at the prompt type: uvadb -a userid -e userid@full.computername.virginia.edu Remember that all ids and addresses are specified in lowercase letters by postmaster. It would look like this: mailhub: /home/upostmst $ uvadb -a mst3k -e mst3k@holmes.acc.virginia.edu |
Scenario 3: |
3. You receive failed mail as a result of someone attempting to register on the hscs (hospital) mail system. You may receive a failed mail that looks like this: Date: Tue,
19 Feb 02 11:46:33 EST This is an automatically-generated form letter. If you reply to it, please do not assume that the person who will read your reply is aware of the details below. Your request to register to receive electronic mail at mst3k@hscmail.mcc.virginia.edu has not succeeded. The surname (thomas) and student ID number (123456789) combination you have supplied is not in our database. Please direct inquiries to "accounts@Virginia.EDU" or to 924-3731. Forward the mail to hscs-postmaster@virginia.edu and delete. |
