| 1. Plans for unix cluster. | Jim/Hamp | A web page that discusses cluster issues has been developed. Pop users are _not_ being asked to migrate to the CMS. The cluster meeting notes are available off of our main page. The system status page needs to be moved to jm. |
| 2. Archive (hardware and software). | Hamp | IBM 3494 is here and working. Have gone with
magstore tape robot (10 GB capacity uncompressed) - robot holds
210 tapes (not going with writable optical) - 6 terabytes total. The ADSM software needs to be configured. Someone from Hamp's group will work with Dave Saunders to test ADSM; Dave is struggling getting cross cabling to work. Hoping the new archive will be available to users next semester (spring 98). |
| 3. vBNS and Internet2 | Jim | Internet 2 project has been funded by the University and NSF (50/50). vBNS connection made 8/23/97; getting ~10 megabits/second (during test to ODU). Will only see increased thruput if moving data between supercomputer sites, NASA, DOE, or 20 other Univ. sites (all I2 sites - no real difference in commodity traffic). Need to update info at: HP Network Connection Project and Internet 2 project (better page) |
| 4. "Research News" | Tom | Need to start work on a "new" Research News (to send out mid January). Need to get a statement regarding the impact of the NPACI and SUR grants on researchers. |
| 5. Software Installations and Updates (including GIS/ESRI and GCG) | Tom/Ross |
Robin and Hamp still working on creating create a set of procedures for
software installs. Dawn is generating a list of contacts that are interested in a statewide ESRI/GIS license; Dawn has asked Mike Phoenix (of ESRI) to draw up a prelim proposal. GCG - ITC paid for extra licenses for ITC supported RS6000s. Gauss is being moved to the sp. Bought 10 user floating licenses. Ross mentioned a web submission form for Gaussian jobs. Ted is looking into this - it is unclear whether Gaussian can be compiled on sp. |
| 6. NPACI (National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure) and SUR Grant | Tim S. | Budget is in; $325K from NSF; about 1/2 of what we requested.
Tim S believes that letter from Sandridge has been received.
Start date was (retroactive)
Oct 1. ITC adds soft money, pieces of SP, software maintenance, 1
existing position (combo of Chris, Tom S and Dawn). The SUR grant is on hold. The equipment is coming in but it hasn't been decided who gets what. Tim meets with Braden in late November. The Alpha centurion computer has been ordered. Will have more computing power than the sp. |
| 7. SP | Hamp | Switch still not working. (IBM claims that nodes can't act as
routers !) The upgrade may fix this. New software for SP is here. Schedule: beginning Dec 6 (should take about a week) 1) upgrade OS on nodes, 2) install PSP and HPF, 3) install new MPI. The sp will be moved to the unmanned machine room in Carruthers. Chris has mailed sp-fellows regarding the changes. She will forward a copy to Sue Ellen to post to uva-lsp). Chris also mailed Cornell/Pittsburg users about potential resources at SanDiego. |
| 8. ITC Research Advisory Committee | Tim S. and Dee | John Hawley (Astronomy) - is the chair - John reports that he has
recruited about 1/2 of the committee members. The committee will review request for SP migration projects, etc. |
| 9.GRA Training | Dee | Tom S will meet with CS students (CS 696). Other people to contact: Rich Isreal (GSAS) Mitch Rosen or Dean of Grad Students (SEAS) |
| 10. Department Outreach | Dee and Tim | Terry L is doing several meetings - we will try to
piggyback with her. Tim is doing a Darden followup. Tom S met with Martha to discuss needs of high end graphics users. They also discussed the development of a brochure with information on databases. Dawn is going to check with Commerce/Darden regarding access to CRSP data sets on CD's. |
| 11. Y2K Issues | Need owner | Tom S reports that OSP is getting demands that researchers report on the Y2K compliance of their software. This needs to be tied into the bigger Y2K effort - need to link those Y2K's web pages which deal with research issues to the Research Group's Home Page. |
