ITC-ResComp
Tasks & Projects To Do: 07/26/99
Project Owner/Date Comments
1. Non-IBM Research Computing Engines (both Sun and SGI) Hamp/Tim T. Orange cluster and SGI cluster (Unix lab) names will be orange#.unixlab and teal#.unixlab respectively.
  • Any one can get a blue.unix via normal accounts webpage.
  • Anyone needing SGI, Sun for visualization work or the SP for long running jobs
  • Undergrads need faculty sponsor.
  • Separate account request webpage, similiar to CorpTime.
  • Have SP/Unixlab be a subset of blue.unix so 1 userid/password.
  • No umenu, no e-mail, no web server.
  • Use PBS Portable Batch System (PBS) to manage job queue.
  • Run GCG(visual piece)need interactive use greater than allowed with SP. Software on only one platform, e.g., ANSYS on AIX versus take to Solaris.
Move Khoros to Solaris? Other savings or costs?
2. ADSM/HSM (archive) (hardware and software). Hamp

Tim T.
IBM removed ADSM from Consortium software; waffling about cost. won't be off-list until 9/1999. Transfer will be user by user. Target date: Fall, 1999
Spring,1999: Hamp has started moving ITC & "public" data into HSM.
Coordinate archive (ADSM) group.
Contact each user and say we will move you-can't use archive during transfer.
Tim T.: Draft space use policy, circulate to group, then Tim S. can take to directors for approval. By Sept. 15
3. "Research News" Tim T. ResComp group writing for a Fall edition
4. Software Installations and Updates . .
5. NPACI (National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure) and SUR Grant Tim S.
Tom

Legion still has a "few" bugs.
6. SP Tom
Ed

Tim S.
Will get back on checkpoint issue.
Ed studied class usage and announcing new submit classes; upgrade of nodes to 160 Mhz processors; 8 nodes dedicated to parallel jobs. http://jm.acs.Virginia.EDU/research/docs/SP_new.html
2 new switches and adapters for all nodes on order. Will require system downtime when installed by IBM
7. ITC Research Advisory Committees Tim S., Tom S.,
Tim T.
UCIT sub-committee re-drafting proposal for research computing to take into account ACAC sub-comm. comments.
ACAC has res. computing subcommittee headed by Steve Stern. Discussing long & short term solutions.
8/99: Preliminary Technology Proposal to "Create an Advanced Computational Support Center for Science and Engineering" by Tim Sigmon
8. Research Computing Support Center Dawn Adelsberger-Mangan/Tim T. Space in 244Wilson Hall, old NMC space, plus two staff offices and 3rd located in Center. Try to develop current Unix Lab in Small Hall as satellite center. Hire, train, and supervise consultants there as part of RCSC.
Projected move date, late September, Grand Opening: Fall Break, Oct 14.
9. Department Outreach Tim T. From ACAC res. computing subcommittee: need to try again-figure out better way to reach faculty - faculty meetings? Surveys?
10. Y2K Issues Jim We have Y2K plan for unix - it's under control.
UVA Year 2000 Task Force Jeff Sponaugle chairing research issues
