To Dos & Old Business:

Numbers in parenthesis match the numbers on the To-Do Table
we reviewed at this meeting.

(1) Plans for unix cluster
TAS: Add Poe? Create new accounts by cluster or by school? How
          to share files?
Start immediately - do new users go on cluster?
TMS: Move Poe and Hobbes users to home dir before cluster.
TAS: Only 25 GB of 80 GB that is user accessible.
George is contacting heavy POP users on Poe to get them to stop.
    ECI: Start WATT planning Thursday.
Additional funds in 98-99 for more RS6000's and Sun's to
replace Curry edschool, Poe, and Hobbes.
One undergrad - the "pop email" message - her reply to root
was "stop sending this message. I don't need it." Had to call her.

(2) Archive (hardware and software)
TAS: Did mtg recap for new focus on maggie users. Waiting on Dave to
some degree. Migration to start within weeks.
TMS: Big filesystems being setup. Lots of discussion at mtg on
how to get off. About 141 users; 16 not at UVA. Group will
meet biweekly through end of June when Dave leaves.
ECI: Could /net/public3 also be /public3 and
/archive/public be also be /public to make it easier?
TODO> TFT to send email on this.

(3) "Research News"
    - Dialin added from TMS's email.

(4) Software Installations and Updates (including GIS/ESRI and GCG)
TAS: Dawn, Lea, and Shirley Payne held mtg on ESRI. See if she'd
          coordinate statewide purchase license.
RLW: GCG - Will map out migration timetable on Thursday. No
complaints from people migrated from Faraday to Avery. So GCG
cost will decrease dramatically - only need two nodes. Will
get pro-rata five node license cost rebate.

(5) NPACI (National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure)
    and SUR Grant
    - Web page notice sent out.
    - Got accounts on San Diego computers.
    - Legion limping along
    - Documenting in HTML now instead of postscript.
TAS: Have lots of bottom up docs.
TMS: SUR - All done. Ready to start next round. All equipment
installed and running, even biochemical engineering stuff.

(6) SP
-Haven't had chance to get to discussion about making control node
sp2.login the only interactive node and drop other nodes to do
     compiles.
TAS: Can we put wrapper message on nodes we're dropping? Check
          with Bill.
TMS: Do targeted email to the f1n3 users.
TAS: Need to pick a date.
TODO> TMS: IBM wants a write-up on our SP users. CPR will send them
           something.
TODO> TMS: Put both numbers and notable projects on SP. Will put this
on SP web page. Will include Legion in the list.
TMS: This is to help IBM justify more equipment.
TAS: Can we include non-SP SUR grant projects like ADSM?
TMS: Yes, when they are functioning.
CPR: Doesn't know who SUR folks are. TAS will do SUR folks.

(7) ITS Research Advisory Committee
TAS: Consensus is that there is nothing to meet about.
ECI: Could we send Research strategic project/plan to email?
TODO> TMS: Yes, can do.

(8) GRA Training
    No discussion

(9) Departmental Outreach

(10) Y2K Issues
TFT: Reviewed mtg with Jeff and discussed Y2K handout.
           Phase II
           - Decentralized systems
           - Special focus on researchers (Sponaugle)
           - Special focus on non-traditional computing devices
             (Belew)
           - Theme of awareness and distributed accountability
Beginning May 1st will have special raining session for
researchers. Y2K progress report -- progress will get
rated green, yellow, or red on each report.

(11) Process Simplification
     TAS: Reviewed topic.

(12) Non-IBM Research Computing Engines (both SUN and SGI)
     No discussion
