To Dos & Old Business:

Note: The unix cluster meeting notes can be accessed from the main page.

Numbers in parenthesis match the numbers on the To-Do Table
we reviewed at this meeting.

(1) Plans for unix cluster
    - Cluster nodes twice speed of Faraday
TMS: need way to know who got to their CPU limit
EHC: thinks this is logged; need to see what the log says.
	need notification method.

(2) Archive (hardware and software)
TMS: Finally have ADSM 3.0 -- got 1/26 -- so can start seriously
    EHC: Have cabling correct, we
TMS: Target date -- Fall 1998

(3) vBNS and Internet2 --> Move to the Completed Tasks Table
that was reviewed at this meeting.

(4) "Research News"
    - Put ADSM on topics.
TODO> TAS: will have draft out by Friday 1/30.

(5) Software Installations and Updates (including GIS/ESRI and GCG)
TAS/ECI: have reviewed Robin's proposal -- need to get back to Robin.
They think we ought to broaden scope to micro, not just Unix.

RLW: GCG software no longer AIX version for new one (Version 10)
	Version 9.1A doesn't all work
EHC: Alternatives: run on Solaris and/or on SGI's not just ACHS (crick)
	Support issues favor SGI deployment

TODO> EHC: Identify GCG users who are NOT on Avery -- see if have their
own SGI workstations - JAJ concerned this maybe be bad precedent
	to set.

DMA: ESRI update: got E-mail from Mike Phoenix at ESRI. Can do 15
	Virginia univ./colleges for $100,000
TODO> DMA: she'll poll these 15 to see what they want to do.
License is for all platforms, unlimited use...may just prorate
cost to univ/colleges by their current costs giving all
	proportional discount.

EHC: Gauss Got license key only Economics uses. ITC Doesn't want on
Faraday, so got floating license on any RS6000. Econ paid
original; ITC paid difference (approx. double) - Not sure license
	working -- getting test users.

RLW: No update on Gaussian; did get it to compile on SP, in G94
directory (cluster not issue). User may still have problems with
running -- not sure if resolved.

(6) NPACI (National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure)
    and SUR Grant

TAS: Alpha Centurion arrived; Making Legion more robust: increase MTBF,
hired new person-Cathy? with NPACI $
	Not sure matching dollarts freed up from Sandridge;
Do have access to other resources.

  TMS: NAPACI update
TODO> We need UVA NPACI webpages -- our activity, who, what, etc.
	We're not a resource partner
Should have no problems getting access to other systems

  TMS: SUR update
Negotiation done (EHC: node delivery today)
TODO> TMS send EHC list of who gets what-he listed some names...
About $1.9 million in list cost (spent ~$400,000)

ECI: With this list of who got what, do we need E-mail them to give
	them information on support?
TMS: No real point- most already know or won't need; we know players.

(7) SP
Switch works, upgrade did fix it
Still routing to switch nodes, which IBM said was problem
    HPF done
TMS: MPI - in and testing.
TMS: the move/upgrade went very smoothly
EHC: Move took all day, upgrade went much better than past times.
Parallel submit; user support issue, differences between versions,
TODO>	need to make documentation reflect this.

TMS: Pittsburg users have until March
CPR: No reports of who using Pittsburg, but did some contacting of
those she knew. Nothing to do by help them get to NPACI resources.

(8) ITS Research Advisory Committee
TMS: John back in action - trying to find meeting time.

(9) GRA Training
    No discussion

(10) Departmental Outreach
TMS: UCIT Committee had adhoc research subcommittee misperception
about GIS, CRSP, etc. ITC has nothing to do with it (per SLN)
Front line support might be library, but we provide hardware and
	some software.
TAS: How to get library to acknowledge?
TODO> JAJ: Get something in our webpages.
TODO> TAS: He'll talk to Martha (MRS) about getting ITC credit on
	Library's documentation

(11) Y2K Issues
JAJ: Departmental coordinator should handle research related Y2K
	issues.
TODO> ECI: Confirm whose it is and move it there.

(12) NEW ITEM -- Process Simplification
TMS: process simplification - research oriented piece of it. OSP
"G.A.M.S." quarter-million dollar package that tracks grants
dollars, positions, etc. Not really research computing support,
sort of, Melvin Mallory is ITC person on this task force

OTHER/New Business:
JAJ: Notion of possibility of Sun cluster for engineering, probably
summer. Possibly give folks choice of cluster. Get a Unix account
that permits login to IBM or Sun cluster.

ECI: Strategic planning on horizon, so what projects for coming year?
