To Dos & Old Business:
Numbers in parenthesis match the numbers on the To-Do Table of December 25, 1998 that we reviewed at this meeting. (1) Discussion on Orange Cluster and (2) SGI Origin200s policies. ------------------------------------------------------------------ EHC: For Orange cluster order 6 single CPU Ultra 10s -- fastest CPU, 1/2 GB memory. Rules for accounts: same as Unixlab (see last meeting's minutes) ECI: could we use the CorpTime account webpage for account creation? that could check whois, tell undergrads need faculty sponsor. MJS:Glen Draper wrote the CST webpage. DMA: get one account for SP/Unixlab/Orange Cluster. What about Chris' SP Survey that current SP users fill out? EHC: Load Leveler 2.1 has been removed from HP, Sun, and SGI platforms by IBM. They will offer a SP2/AIX only configuration. So are looking at NQS/loadleveler that has web interface. TMS: Should Orange cluster be interactive or batch? We had decided some interactive on both SGI, and Suns. TMS: so need loadbalancing EHC - may need to invent ISSH agent, but should be do-able. ECI: Discussion of names -- orange# is name? have .unixlab as domain? orange#.unixlab - for sun's SGI's - teal.unixlab? SEB: disagreed with teal name. TEH: which domain? (8) SP upgrade -------------- EHC: SP Upgrade, last one done tomorrow, reconfiguration will be done. splogin becomes control. Still undetermined what to do about the switch. No upgrade to date. There are eight nodes in parallel pool, all 166 MHZ, all the same. (4) ADSM --------- EHC: will be ready to start putting users on in 2 weeks or so. IBM is waffling about what to do about ADSM, what pricing will be. Commercially available packages are around $75K, so he'll put in contingency for this in 1999-2000 budget. If we have to do that route, we'll do an evaluation of several packages. (6) CGC/SGI users ----------------- No GCG/SGI issues (3) Home Directory ------------------- EHC: Heard back from cost accounting. Disk wedges will be $63/year for 250 MB. Poe and Avery existing disk wedge users are moved to new home2 directory, Hobbes and faraday users are next. Have about 6 to 8 GBs to allocate to disk wedges. Report from UCIT and ACAC research computing subcommittees. ----------------------------------------------------------- TAS: UCIT sub-committee proposing to set up ACHS style research computing support center. Working on new draft of this proposal. TFT: ACAC sub-committee discussed long term goals for research computing support 2 weeks ago, doing short term issues and goals today. Discussion headed up by Steve Stern. Research Computing Support Center Proposal. TEH: Small Hall Lab, can convert room 102, put some desks at front. TMS: what about co-locating support staff with center? Would it become too much general unix support? Dee handed out Mitch Rosen's proposal.Meeting adjourned at 11:30, next meeting February 22, 1999, 10:00 AM
