HSM Disk Quotas This document discusses the quota system used on the Hierarchial Storage Manager (HSM) Service.
How Much Space You Have
How much space you get depends on your affiliation with the University when ITC created your account. This table details how much space a user receives by classification:

Undergraduates who need large data file storage space should be working project with a faculty member. The faculty sponsor can request that an undergraduate student be given access to specific subdirectories under her HSM directories by e-mailing res-consult@Virginia.EDU.
Graduate students working on research projects with faculty members should also have these project data files stored in subdirectories under the faculty member's HSM directory. This setup makes it easier for faculty members to retain project data and files after the graduation of their students. Reaching Your Space LimitOn the HSM and on Unix machines that access the Home Directory Service (such as the blue.unix.virginia.edu cluster), when you reach your quota you cannot write any more data to your directory. You will see an error message when this condition occurs. On a Unix machine, you would see the error:
NFS write error on host hsm.Virginia.EDU: 88.What all these dialog boxes and error messages mean is that the Hierarchial Storage Manager (HSM) server will no longer allow you to add any more to your directory. Until you delete files or get additional space, you will be unable to make any changes.

Getting More SpaceIf you need more space than your disk quota allows, you have several options:
- Use a disk that does not have quota enforcement for temporary work.
- Ask for an increase in your disk quota.
- Delete unneeded files.
Windows and Macintosh users who do not have a large enough quota to store temporary files should store them on their computer's hard disk. They can then copy only those files needed for long-term use over to the Home Directory Service for more secure storage. Unix users can use the /tmp and the /bigtmp (on some ITC machines) areas of those systems to store files needed for only a very short period of time.
Another option is to ask for an increase in your disk quota. HSM users and users of other ITC systems can direct their requests to accounts@virginia.edu.
Finally, you can lease additional disk space by the year. The disk space leased can either be additional disk space to blue.unix account or additional HSM space. The rates for these disk spaces are different. See the Unix Services document for more information on leasing additional home directory disk space.
A few restrictions and hints
The HSM is for long term storage of large files and archive large datasets. Not as a day-to-day backup of all your files.
- Please do NOT put files beginning with a "dot." in the HSM, (for example, your ".profile" or ".xinitrc" files).
- After you leave the University or your blue.unix account is deleted, files in the HSM will be retained for five (5) years. After five years, they will no longer be available or retrievable. Please plan to migrate your data when you leave the University.
