Feb 23: hobbes & palladio disabled, curry becomes web server only; Mar 30: Avery becomes web server only.

Jan99-Mar99 Home Directory Project Hamp/Dee "Disk Wedges" approved at $63 per 250 MB per year. Allocating 6-8 GB for wedges.
Jan99-Mar99 Archive/ADSM Hamp ADSM is now at 3.1 (Dec 98); SP can see it. IBM removed ADSM from Consortium software; waffling about cost. We're proceeding anyway, software wouldn't be off-list until 10/2000.
FEBRUARY, 1998 Process Simplication Tom (2/98)Research oriented piece of Process Simpl.
OSP "G.A.M.S." $.25 million package that tracks grant $, positions, etc.
Not really research computing support, but sort of.
Melvin Mallory is ITC person on this task force.
Nov98-Jan99 Department Outreach Tim T. TAS talked to MRS (2/98) - can tread lightly but share credit.
He's not sure they see us as equal partners.
Nov98-Jan99 ITC Research Advisory Committees Tim S., Send Research Strategic Project/Plan to committee by email.
Nov98-Jan99 Software Installations and Updates Tom

Still working on GCG migration; rest of users will migrate in October during next license renewal. Migration done.
GIS/ESRI-Wally contacting ESRI users statewide to form panel discussion for Sept. '98 GIS meeting to discuss feasibility & implementation of statewide license
Nov98-Jan99 Home Directory Hamp/Dee "Disk Wedges" approved at $63 per 250 MB per year. Allocating 6-8 GB for wedges.
Enabling all faculty accounts that on blue.unix for home directory

will roll out to all faculty and staff next. Hamp notifying users.

4 nodes left to migrate:hobbes, palladio, curry by Feb.; avery in March. Will gather feedback on avery migration from users once have them on NetApp.
Orange cluster, open to all, intended for > 1hr CPU jobs; purpose & users similar to Unix lab: faculty, grads, undergrads with faculty sponsor. Ed looking a "loadleveler" like product: CLUSTOR Discussed along with MHPCC (Maui) Scheduler Probably should stick with LoadLeveler; work on getting Web frontend to it available.

Do some sizing. Small Solaris cluster and add AIX nodes?
Make announcement when adding new nodes to cluster
Insure that all software is mounted on all the new nodes when they're added
Several load testing trials, went well.
Proposal for next fiscal year.
A cluster for researchers, i.e., not "entitlement" users.
Research cluster - not blue or orange cluster.
A kind of extenstion to SP.
Not SP nodes - but would run LoadLeveler.
Run GCG - visual piece - need interactive use greater than allowed with SP.
Maybe poll users on how they might use Solaris cluster.
Software on only one platform, e.g., ANSYS on AIX versus take to Solaris.
Move Khoros to Solaris?
Other savings or costs?

Get equipment ordered for E-school this fiscal year.
New cluster group being convened.
Current WATT becomes Minerva replacement.
Map out GCG migration time table on Thurs, April 1st.
No complaints from faraday to crick or crimson.unix GCG migration folks.
Dawn and Lea met with Shirley Payne in 3/98 to see if she'd coordinate statewide ESRI purchase license.

Second issue out in March '98.
Moved the avery users of GCG to ACHC's crick.
Moved the other GCG users to a Unix lab machine; only one CPU.
Dawn spoke with Steve H. and gave him info on ESRI. Haven't heard from Steve about meeting of Univ. and college purchasing.
Notice on web page sent to research group.
All equipment installed and running; even Biochemical Engineering stuff.
Meeting held with Jeff S.
Special focus on researchers discussed at March mtg.

Biochem user working. Runs 3 jobs at time/she's happy.
Web page done!
Jan 98 vBNS and Internet2 Jim Internet 2 project has been funded by the University and NSF (50/50).
vBNS connection made 8/23/97; getting ~10 megabits/second (during test to ODU). Will only see increased thruput if moving data between supercomputer sites, NASA, DOE, or 20 other Univ. sites (all I2 sites - no real difference in commodi ty traffic).

Need to update info at: HP Network Connection Project and Internet 2 project (better page)
Nov 97 Research News Tom S The first issues of Research News has been mailed.
An itc-research mailing list has been created (owned/moderated by Dawn) - current membership is about 100.
A News item has been added to to Research Computing Group home page.

4 nodes here and installed. However the nodes are still undergoing testing - they are not "active" and can not be accessed yet. We are persuing further expansion.
We should announce the new nodes to the university community (good PR).
Bill and Chris are investigating revamping the job queues.
N.A. Strategic Plan III E-3. Improved Communication among those supporting researchers. Dee Tom S. is attending ATG meetings
N.A. ESRI Update Tom Wally Reed was given $8,000 from ITC to apply to the purchase of the ESRI/GIS software (for the 1998 year only). ITC needs to track usage (userid and machine/department) and distribution of disks.
N.A. ESRI proposal submitted. Tom There will be a state GIS group as of July 1. Tom will look into the possible impact of this group. Tom met with Denise Stevens of UVA GIS center.
Discussion about proposal. Important that ResComp group make recommendation on ESRI software. (Dee will do) Tom S. Most of GIS use is through ptolemy through a web interface. About 50% of this is non-UVA.
Martha: lots of support issues. We don't want to encourage GIS support.
Dee/Tom S. we will provide running environment support for ESRI,but not application support.
Tom S.: software is in disarray on ptolemy, about 1/2 days work to clean up. If GIS Center cleaned things up, then we could provide "running environment" support.
Tom S.: could we recommend $0 for this year since we're already providing hardware and start counting use for next year?
Martha: or say $10K this year and will track usage to see if usage justifies continued financial support.
N.A. Cost of adding software to Software Consortium. Tom $9,000 for SP software (including MPI, HPF) added to existing software budget (Operations budget).
N.A. Will talk with Terry about having someone from ResComp sit in on DSCO's division meetings Martha No regularly scheduled meetings, but we are welcome.
N.A. Facilitate flow of information between Research Computing and DSCO: As dept. assessments are done, information will be shared. Martha Dept. assessments will go to dept. before to other ITC staff.
Martha and Ross are meeting with Terry re this issue (ie it is ongoing) - the group feels strongly that we need to be involved in the recommendation process.
N.A. 11/96 Call to James Adams Jim Jim was not able to attend the meeting.
N.A. Maggie ftp: staff should access maggie with "ftp maggie.itc 1021" ; users use "ftp maggie.itc" to access files in the /archive area. Hamp Change made; Tom will contact archive users. Tom will also send notice to LSPs, postnews, etc.
N.A. Will talk to Nancy Boling on participating in assessments. Tom Nancy will provide a list of things on which we can help.
N.A. Review ResComp brochure and update for fall; review ResComp Web site; conform to ITCWeb standards. Tom Should we have "new faculty" page? Put off of ITCWeb or ResComp? Note: This item is being removed (though it has not been completed) - as it does not fall under the auspices of this group.
N.A. Plans for faraday cluster. Software issues to resolve:

Problems with NFS responsiveness; Hamp requested Help Desk to log faraday problems. usd-staff and LSPs (postnews?) will be notified of changes to and problems with faraday; Jason can extract date from HD Call Tracking logs.

SAS and LISREL costs reasonable, have been increased to cover clustering.

GCG is $300/CPU - Not sure GCG usage justifies cost to cluster?

N.A. Joe Burch will maintain systems status Web page; Help Desk staff will post items; remove Pete Y's name from page and change mail to consult@virginia.edu Hamp Dawn modified Systems Status page. Help Desk and Systems and Networks will post to page as appropriate.
N.A. Develop script to automate putting wrapper on applications to collect software usage data. Dawn The script - wrapper.pl resides in userv/bin on holmes. The script writes the systems group and asks for the installation of, or the removal of, a statistics gathering wrapper. To invoke: wrapper.pl.
